A paciência é uma coisa boa quando se pode ter esperança num futuro melhor. Ah, como tudo isso é estúpido, mesquinho e vulgar. E, no entanto, a vida é feita disso. Trabalha-se pra comer e come-se para recomeçar a trabalhar no dia seguinte. A família. Alguém propôs que se proibisse por decreto o casamento dos pobres. Quem o fez era sem dúvida um homem compassivo. Que posso eu dar à minha família com o que ganho? À minha mulher é impossível oferecer-lhe uma vida suportável do ponto de vista do conforto; quanto às crianças, é impossível assegurar-lhes uma educação suficiente. Tudo é estúpido, irremediavelmente estúpido, porque o conjunto das necessidades de um homem é superior à soma de suas forças. Não se poderia encontrar uma solução através duma redistribuição das riquezas, a não ser que nós, os neurasténicos, fôssemos expulsos desse mundo. Para que me serve filosofar assim? É mais um encantador hábito de civilizado, algo no gênero da embriaguez, a julgar pelos seus efeitos no organismo!
